Yamaha Pacifica: The Session Guitar That Became Everyone’s First Electric (1990-Today)

The Yamaha Pacifica is the guitar many players own as their first electric, but it started as a pro instrument built for Los Angeles session players. Born in 1990, it now runs from the affordable PAC112 to the made-in-Japan Pacifica Professional. This guide covers its history, the series, and which Pacifica to buy. For the brand as a whole, see our Yamaha Brand Guide.

Where the Yamaha Pacifica Came From

The Pacifica began at Yamaha Guitar Development (YGD), Yamaha’s custom workshop in Los Angeles, which built guitars for top session players. What those players wanted was one dependable guitar that could cover any genre on a recording date.

It started as an experiment, but Yamaha headquarters in Japan turned the design into a production guitar, and the PAC912 launched in 1990. It was the first Yamaha guitar planned in the US, and the first to use third-party parts, such as custom DiMarzio pickups.

The Pacifica was sold in the US first. A 1990s Japanese Yamaha catalog later announced its arrival in Japan, led by the US-made USA2 and the PAC604W.

The Pacifica Formula: Bolt-On Neck and HSS Pickups

FeatureWhat it does for you
Bolt-on neckSnappy attack, and easy to adjust or replace
HSS pickups (single, single, humbucker)Single-coil sparkle in the neck and middle, humbucker gain at the bridge
Coil split on many modelsTurns the humbucker into a single-coil for even more tones

That combination is why the Pacifica works for nearly any style: clean funk, blues, pop or rock without changing guitars.
